Equinox Personal Trainer Diary — Day 1: A NYC Data Scientist Begins His Certification

So, I somehow got this Personal Trainer gig.

On East 92nd Street in New York City, of all places. When I realized I wanted to pursue a career in personal fitness, I assumed I’d have to claw my way in just to get a shot. I’m lucky that sharp nails weren’t necessary, although it definitely helps that I grew up gaining considerable coaching experience and… well, I won’t bore you with the details (for today).

Well… Technically I am not a Personal Trainer yet.

As a data scientist, I have a Master’s in Health Data Science, but no formal training certification since my Red Cross Swim Instructor certification. Luckily, Equinox has a certification program through the Equinox Fitness Training Institute (EFTI).

I have until this Friday to learn the materials and pass the exam to join the staff as a “Tier 3 Personal Trainer.”

Training so far has been about — you guessed it — the body.

It feels so weird to log into Canvas again after being so happy to delete it from my virtual existence, but it had to be done. For knowledge!

For anatomy.

So

Much

Anatomy

This comes as no surprise to me and I hope comes to no surprise to anyone interested in becoming a personal trainer. The body is an instrument, and I feel like personal trainer must know the instrument well enough to be able to riff and adapt like a jazz artist.

Anywho, I tried my damndest to speed run through as many modules as possible and got through what was supposed to be the first three days of work.

Okay, definitely a flex, but my rationale for this was to gain familiarity with as much of the material as possible and get a sense of scope. I know I retained very little but hey, I have time. Specifically, eight hours each of the next four days.

I hope to share more of my journey to help enable others through fitness!

And I hope to see you at the East 92nd Street NYC Equinox!

Note: I am a personal trainer at Equinox. My opinions are my own and don’t necessarily reflect those of Equinox.
